Tonga Water Board (TWB) was established in 1966 and since has provided a reticulated water supply to the capital city of Nuku’alofa on the island of Tonga. One of the largest costs associated with supplying water to Nuku’alofa is the cost of pumping water.
The 503kWp Solar Farm and smoothing Battery Energy Storage System (303kWh BESS), designed and installed by Clay Energy as an EPC project, is located on the Tonga Water Board borehole field at Mataki’eua and is connected to the bore LV electrical field supply network connected to the Tonga Power Limited grid. The objective of the solar farm is to reduce energy purchased from TPL by operating the bore pumps during the day (powered predominantly by solar) for daytime supply and storage for use in meeting overnight demand.
